Wag The Dog

Every story I create, creates me. I write to create myself.

– Octavia E. Butler

When I read this quote recently, it made me reflect on how and why I write. The simple truth in these words illustrates the thrill of reinvention. I think this also uncovers the reason why I struggle with writer’s block from time to time. I have multiple half-finished stories that are just sitting in my folder in the cloud waiting for me to return to them. Why haven’t I returned to them?

There are many possible reasons, but the simplest explanation is fear – fear of inauthenticity. I don’t know that I can recapture the feeling that originally inspired the story and worry that continuing it will stem from a place far less honest. Maybe to break the cycle I just need to try putting myself in those places, emotionally raw or not, and just write my way through it until I find the path back to its origin again. I would love to hear how others break through this feeling.

Have something to add?
