Looking over the early Super Tuesday results, I’m just terrified that Donald Drumpf is still leading the Republican pack. His “brand” of facile, flip-flop fear-mongering puts Dubya’s to shame. Does he want to build a wall? Or is he willing to negotiate a slightly smaller wall? Does he want to allow Syrian immigrants into the country? Or is he wanting to ship them all out? Does he recall his comments on David Duke? Or is he still trying to feign astonishing ignorance?
I still can’t comprehend how he has managed to captivate the hearts and minds of so many Americans for this long. It makes me want to round up as many of his proponents as possible and ask them to spare just 22 minutes to watch John Oliver explain things to them. Although he makes some very humorous and salient points, I doubt if it would sway anyone’s opinion. I wonder what the non-Drumpf supporting Republican general public feels about his impact on the remaining candidates. Does his dog & pony show make them bolt upright from a dead sleep every night? This candidacy is like a Family Guy gag – something that ignores convention and runs a minute too long. Hell, why don’t we all get in on the gag and get on board with the Dumpfinator Chrome extension and some merch!
Oh, and don’t forget #MakeDonaldDrumpfAgain

You know I’m no supporter of the Donald, but I hope next week to see you opine about the “super-delegates” who have already made it impossible for Sanders to win… Hillary’s flip-flops on gay marriage, gun control, TPP, or which way the wind is blowing… her love of her friend and mentor who was a Grand Wizard or Grand Dragon or whatever… and her ever-changing name. Drumpf… seriously? The man’s grandfather changed his name legally when he came to America. John Oliver’s bandwagon has another passenger!
Joel, I’m no fan of the super-delegates now. Does that count? When was the last time you heard/saw a politician who didn’t flip-flop on their stances if they thought they gained an advantage by doing so? It’s political de rigeur. Hillary definitely has plenty of faults, but she doesn’t scare me like the Drumpf does. As Oliver points out, if he’s going to knock Stewart for changing his name legally, he should be ready to accept the same criticism. You have to admit Drumpf doesn’t have the same cache as Trump. Regardless, I’m fine being an unapologetic John Oliver bandwagoner. I enjoy his lampooning of political figures (Republican or otherwise) as well as comedic takes on other topics like Canada’s political landscape, the state of Daily Fantasy Sports, Evangelism, etc.
Trump didn’t change his name legally. He didn’t have to. That’s the name on his birth certificate, as well as his father’s. Trump’s grandfather certainly isn’t the only German immigrant who Anglicized the spelling of his name. You act as if calling him by his German name is an insult to him. He has never denied the root of his name. Are you going to refer to Jamie Lee Curtis as “Schwartz” Will you call Hillary Clinton “Hillary Blythe”?
None of this is about him feeling insulted by his German name. It’s about the “what if” and how it might impact his supporters’ impressions and the political landscape.
