For those who don’t know, Becky is my sister. Barb is a long-time friend of the family and one of my former roommates. They’ve been in a long-standing love affair for decades. Not with each other, with The Monkees. Yes, you read that right, The Monkees. If you have no clue who they are, give your fingers a little exercise and hit the internets. There were many instances where the two of them would reminisce about their childhood (and eventually adulthood) love of The Monkees show and their music. I know my sister’s favorite was Davy Jones, but I can’t say with certainty who Barb favored.
I can only imagine the excitement they’re feeling as they learn that The Monkees just released a new album, entitled Good Times, that coincides with the Blu-ray release of their shows. I’m sure there are countless in the music industry who will poo-poo this album, but let me tell you a dirty, dirty little secret about it. It’s getting positive critical reviews. If you’re just too lazy to click any of the links, allow me to explain. They’ve teamed up with a younger producer, Adam Schlesinger, and, much like their early work, they took submissions from current, popular songwriters. I can’t speak for anyone else, but from the songs I’ve heard so far, I can hear each songwriter coming through the song. In a way it’s almost like a tribute album to the various bands/artists performed by 3/4 of the original band (RIP Davy Jones). Your thoughts?
