Unless this is your first trip to FMDY (and if it is, welcome!), you know that Mondays mean music. This week we’re listening to 2 (on Amazon Prime), the latest release by Mudcrutch. What’s that you say? Never heard of ’em? You may know them better as that band Tom Petty was in before he was known as Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. What’s that you say? Never heard of ’em? Okay, you may may know them better as that band Tom Petty was in before he joined the Traveling Wilburys. What’s that you say? Never heard of ’em? Come on, maybe it’s time you came out from under that rock. Take a look around and check out this world… you know… the one that existed before you were born.
For those who enjoy a little music genealogy, Mudcrutch’s lineup is exactly the same as their original one minus the lead vocals of Jim Lenahan. It’s also mostly the same as Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers minus mainstays Howie Epstein (bass) and Stan Lynch (drums). Why am I bringing up genealogy? I do it to illustrate that with all that commonality throughout the years, you’re not going to be misled into believing this album is something it’s not. Call it southern rock. Call it country rock. Call it Americana. The music is simple, but not simplistic. It’s catchy and, for anyone growing up in the 70s, 80s, or 90s, it’s nostalgic. Check it out and let me know what you think.
