Music Mondays: Margaret Glaspy

Margaret Glaspy Emotions and Math

Welcome to Emotions and Maththe debut full-album release from Margaret Glaspy. The album came out a month ago, but I passed it up for awhile because of the title. It used to be an album’s title or cover art would cause me to take a chance on something I probably wouldn’t normally. I just wasn’t in the mood for it then, but gave it a shot over this past week and I’m glad I did.

Having no prior exposure to Margaret Glaspy (she’s released some EP’s), I had no idea what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised to hear a grunge-like, guitar-driven collection of pop/rock songs reminiscent of Liz Phair. I’d also swear that she’s channeling Billie Holiday on some of the slower, bluesy torch songs. There’s something about her vocals – the way she shapes her notes – that brings Billie to my mind. I was also thinking there’s something about her music that brings Joni Mitchell to mind, but I think it’s probably closer to Rickie Lee Jones. Either way, that’s some pretty good company to keep. So, what do you think?

If YouTube fails you, you can also check out Emotions and Math on Amazon Prime or below on Spotify.

Have something to add?
