Welcome to Emotions and Math, the debut full-album release from Margaret Glaspy. The album came out a month ago, but I passed it up for awhile because of the title. It used to be an album’s title or cover art would cause me to take a chance on something I probably wouldn’t normally. I just wasn’t in the mood for it then, but gave it a shot over this past week and I’m glad I did.
Having no prior exposure to Margaret Glaspy (she’s released some EP’s), I had no idea what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised to hear a grunge-like, guitar-driven collection of pop/rock songs reminiscent of Liz Phair. I’d also swear that she’s channeling Billie Holiday on some of the slower, bluesy torch songs. There’s something about her vocals – the way she shapes her notes – that brings Billie to my mind. I was also thinking there’s something about her music that brings Joni Mitchell to mind, but I think it’s probably closer to Rickie Lee Jones. Either way, that’s some pretty good company to keep. So, what do you think?
