Music Mondays: The Avalanches

The Avalanches Wildflowerthe avalanches wildflower

What have you done in the past 16 years? Think about that for a moment. Did you get married? Did you have a child? Did you graduate from high school or college? Did you undergo any life-altering changes? If you’re The Avalanches, you just released your second album entitled, Wildflower. This Aussie group has been working on this album since 2005. With band members coming and going, they’ve managed to release a couple EP’s and a few mixtapes. Don’t say they haven’t been busy!

With 16 years between full albums, what would you expect to hear? World music? Disco? Hip-hop? Psychedelic rock? Funk? Electronica? Samples? Probably not, but this album is rife with all of it. And, at least in my opinion, it works. Maybe it’s because the band has been on such a long hiatus and music trends have changed and splintered and changed again that I had no idea what to expect since 2000’s Since I Left You. There’s also a joie de vivre on the album that I can’t help smiling at songs like Because I’m Me, Frankie Sinatra, and The Noisy Eater (to name a few). I haven’t found an online resource to share as in other posts, so you can go here for Amazon samples from Wildflower or listen to the two offerings below.
