Music Mondays: Lykke Li

Lykke Li

With a houseful of guests since last Wednesday, I didn’t expect to have time to listen to any new music from Friday’s crop or have anything worth posting. Thankfully for you faithful readers, I got to listen to four new albums today as I dug out from the email deluge that occurred during my mini vacation. I also enjoyed Snail Mail’s Lush, Jorja Smith’s Lost & Found, and Serpentwithfeet’s Soil – all for various reasons. They just didn’t stick with me as much this week’s featured artist, Lykke Li.

Lykke Li: So Sad So Sexy

Lykke Li: So Sad So Sexy

Lykke Li dropped her fourth album last Friday, stylized so sad so sexy. Unlike other Music Monday posts, I want to address my only real complaint about this album – its overabundant trap beats usage. Others may be okay with it, but in my personal opinion, where Lykke Li really excels is when her music is more unconventional. Her arrangements express the album title’s duality as about half rely on the old 808 hip-hop beats and the other half are ballads. Which one is sad and which is sexy? I’ll let you decide.

Even with those aforementioned trap beats, Li adds sonic elements – usually altered vocalizations – that give your ear something else to focus on. Thematically, I have to wonder what happened in her personal life. With tracks entitled: hard rain, deep end, two nights, last piece, sex money feelings die, so sad so sexy, better alone, bad woman, and utpoia I’d think there may have been an affair gone wrong. Then again, that just seems too obvious. The only track on the album left off that list is jaguars in the air. It seems like that should be a metaphor. Reading the lyrics, however, it seems less likely. The lyrics for so sad so sexy may contain the key to unlocking the source of this album’s inspiration. Here Li fully embraces the power of saying goodbye with sex rather than words:

I was only lyin’ when I looked in your eyes
I’m run down just like a river inside
And it’s so sad, so sexy
So sad, so sexy
I was only lyin’ when I looked in your eyes
Now I’m lying with you one last time
So sad, so sexy
So sad, so sexy
Don’t turn around
I’m not the one for you
Don’t turn around
I keep on thinkin’, why?
Don’t have the guts to break it
